Theory test

Theory test is a computer based multiple choice test and is designed to test applicant's knowledge of the Highway code. Who has to sit the test? Everybody who wants to drive a vehicle in the UK is required to sit and pass this test to be able to take the final practical driving test.

The multiple-choice questions in the theory test are based on 3 books:

  1. The Highway Code - see picture

  2. Know your traffic signs

  3. Driving - the essential skills

Study these to learn the rules and skills you will be tested on.

You can buy them from most high street and online book shops.

Both parts must be passed to obtain a theory test pass certificate. This enables the candidate to book a practical driving test. Candidates have two years from the date that they passed the first part of their theory test to take their practical test, or they will have to pass both parts of the theory test once again before they can book a practical test.

It is advisable to seek confirmation from your instructor before booking your practical that you have time to prepare for the test.
