Before you can learn to drive you need to obtain a provisional driving licence. To do this you need to obtain a application form (FORM D1) from your local post office. You can take your theory test once your provisional licence becomes valid. Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday however you can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday. If you apply for your provisional licence before you are 17 you will have to still wait until your birthday before you can take the theory test and also learn to drive.

Once you have got the D1 form you must fill it in, in Black ink and in CAPITAL LETTERS. You will be asked a few simple questions regarding yourself. You will be asked to send a passport photo of yourself with your passport or get someone reliable to sign your photo see form INF1D which is with form D1. You then need to sign your form, and either send a cheque or postal order to the DVLA for £50.00. You can also pay by cash, cheque or debit card at the Post Office.

Further information can be found on the DVLA's website, www.direct.gov.uk/motoring
