To be able to drive legally on the roads in the UK, you must pass two exams. These are a theory test and a practical test.
The Theory Test
This consists of two parts, The multiple choice theory test and the hazard perception test. These tests are to test your understanding on the rules of the road in a number of sections. Both parts of the exam are taken in the same sitting and both parts must be passed before you can take your practical driving test. If you fail one part you must retake both parts again. Your theory test certificate is valid for two years and you must pass your practical test in this time or you will have to retake the test again.
Multiple choice test
This part of the theory test is taken on a touch screen computer. You will be asked 50 multiple choice questions and you must answer 43 questions or more correctly to pass. Each of the questions may have more than one answer but the question will state the number of correct answers required. If you are not sure of an answer you can click on a flag and then come back to it at any time later. The computer will alert you if any quetions are unanswered. All the questions are random from a data base of thousands. You are allowed 15mins practice time at the start to get used to the computer and the questions. You have 57 mins for the test (special needs candidates can apply for more time). To answer a question you just touch the answer you think is correct.
Hazard perception test
Once you have taken the multiple choice part you then take the hazard perception part. You can choose to take a 3 minute break between tests. The hazard perception test involves watching a series of 14 clips each lasting approx 1min. Each of these clips are real driving footage and they all contain a scorable hazard. 1 clip has two hazards in it. As you watch the clip, if you see a hazard you must click the mouse button. The earlier you click the hazard the higher the score. The score is ranked from 5 down to 1. If you click outside the scoring window either too early or late you will score 0. You must not click in patterns or repeatedly as the computer will sense that the pupil is trying to cheat and will be marked as 0. To pass this test you must score at least 44 out of a maximum of 75. You will see each clip only once and they cannot be retaken. Good Luck!

The Practical Test
The driving test involves you driving on a test for 35-40mins and being able to drive safetly and correctly in a series of roads.
You will arrive 10mins before the the test, therefore giving you time to park the car and to relax. You must make sure you have the necessary documents. These are your driving licence, if you have a photo licence you must have both parts of your licence. If you have not got a photo licence you must have some sort of photo ID. Make sure it is a acceptable form of ID, this will be stated on your test letter. You must bring your theory test certificate and your appointment letter. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, make sure you take them with you.
When it is time for your test, the examiner will introduce themselves and will check your documents. then you will be asked to sign an insurance declaration to say that the car you are driving is insured. At this point you can ask permission for your instructor or a friend to accompany you on your test if you wish. On some occasions a supervising examiner will sit in on a test. They will be checking the examiner, not you, so try to forget they are there.
Eyesight test
When you get to the car park you will be asked to read a car numberplate. You should be able to read a vehicle numberplate with letters of 79.4mm high in good conditions from a min distance of 20.5mtrs or 67feet. On new style plates the letters are slightly narrower font and should be read from 20mtrs or 66feet. Should you fail to read the plate you will fail and the test will not take place and you will forfeit the fee.
Show me Tell me
After the Eye test you will be asked two questions about road safety and maintenance. The examiner will write down some details about the car and your instructors ADI number. See page on website for questions.
The Driving Test
You will be briefed on what is expected of you. You will then drive the route as directed by your examiner. This will involve driving through town, on quiet roads and on higher speed roads with a speed limit over 30mph. You will also asked to do some of the test manouvres. These include Turn in the road, Reverse around a corner (left or right), Parallel park and Bay park. You are never asked to do the bay parking and parallel park in the same test. 1 in 3 tests will include the emergency stop as well.
The examiner will ask if you have any questions and then explain how they will be giving you directions. You will be then asked to move off. The examiner will now be studying your performance and recording any mistakes you make. The examiner is not trying to catch you out and are only there to monitor your driving and give directions.Try to relax and drive as you would normally do.
On the test you are allowed to make a limited number of minor faults. These are faults which do not create any immediate danger to other road users. If you make the same minor fault often this can lead to a fail. Minor faults are noted on the examiners sheet. If you make 16 or more minor faults you will fail the test. You are not allowed to make any serious or dangerous faults.
At the end of the test, your examiner will tell you to stop the car and turn off the engine. Relax and the examiner will total your score. They will then tell you if you are succesful or not.
